You will need:

Knitting needles (any size)

Yarn (2-3 balls approx.)

Gauge:

This step is essential

Cast on 20sts (you can include a selvedge if you wish)

Knit 25 rows

Block your swatch and mark out a 1 inch square. You then want to count the number of stitches there are in a 1” row of knitting. You can also count the number of rows but it’s not essential.

The piece needs to be 9” wide, so you want to multiply the number of stitches by 9 (for example, if 1” = 6sts, you would multiply 9 x 6).

The answer is the number of stitches you need to cast on, so: E.g. 9 x 6 = 54sts

Pattern:

The stocking stitch (or stockinette if you prefer the American term) pattern requires a selvedge to prevent curling. Here is an example of the pattern with a 4st selvedge (this is just an example; you would insert the number of stitches you worked out in your gauge into the pattern).

Row 1: K

Row 2: K4, *P*, K4

Repeat these two rows until the fabric is long enough to fit the body as demonstrated in the diagram. Block the fabric.

Twist the piece twice, and join the ends together. Fit around the body as per the diagram and pin across the front and back (it might be handy to enroll a friend to help with this step!) Sew the pinned edges together, and your jumper is finished!
